New Manager takes the reins at Spectators Bar & Bistro
The new boss at the reins of Addington’s sports bar, Spectators, says the role is a dream one and one Grant McWhirter has been training for most of his career.
McWhirter takes over as the manager of Spectators, the bar and bistro inside the Addington footprint on Monday 1 March after a career in sport, racing and hospitality.
“It is the perfect combination of all three so I am loving it,” says McWhirter.
Previously a manager of senior Canterbury representative rugby and cricket teams, McWhirter has also managed restaurants and bars, worked for Canterbury Breweries and has been involved with Addington Raceway in the past, so his new role is the perfect crossover.
“We have a great space with not only the racing crowd but so many world class sporting events held on basically the same grounds so we can cater to their fans as well. In that light we will be looking to expand the hours so people who enjoy the sport, horse racing or just looking for a friendly place to socialise can join us more often.”
Spectators is renowned for its regular food and beverage deals and has become enormously popular as a pre-event gathering point for crowds attending rugby union, rugby league and netball fixtures, all within a few hundred metres.
